Additionally, up to two thirds of all people have HSV-1, which usually causes cold sores on lips and in mouths but can also be transmitted to people’s genitals, typically via oral sex. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that at least one in six people between ages of 14 and 49 have HSV-2, the strain of herpes virus that usually affects genitals.
